STEM Committee

The AIAA-SF STEM K-12 Committee encourages K-12 education in science, technology, engineering, and math.

The STEM K-12 Committee has helped prepare students to start building a vision of who they want to become when they grow up. It is our responsibility to not only prepare students but also educate parents about the many aerospace professions. AIAA is the world’s largest technical society dedicated for global aerospace profession; thus, we want to share the resources available at AIAA with our community in the Bay Area. Members are welcome to volunteer on the committee, attend activities, or maybe just email your ideas to us. This is your opportunity to make an impact in society.

Let’s make a difference!

2020 Student Essay Content for 7th and 8th Grade

Each year, AIAA sponsors an essay contest for middle and junior high school students in seventh and eighth grade to encourage people to think about how aerospace relates to our lives and encourage them to consider a future in science and technology. This year’s theme is “How advanced can you envision space technology and exploration through the next 50 years? What do we need to do NOW to achieve that?”

In light of all the school closures in many cities across the country, we are approving a 1 month extension on all deadlines. This will allow more time for schools, teachers, and students to get their submissions in, and for the sections to review the essays. Please see below for all the new deadlines:

  • April 30, 2020: National deadline for student/schools to submit their papers to their local sections officers
  • May 15, 2020: National deadline for local sections to submit their local section winners to SSTC (Anthony and Erica)
  • June 1, 2020: SSTC Announcement of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners to schools/students/SSTC
  • June, 2020: Mail awards, etc. to winning schools and students
  • Aerospace America to announce winners in the September 2020 issue (original goal)

We highly encourage any interested and eligible students to participate. Full details can be found here.
